Workers employed at a construction site are constantly in danger from accidents that occur at their workplaces. It is important for them to know the types of construction accidents that can affect them. Here, we highlight the most common types of construction site accidents so they can try to avoid them.

  1. Crane or Hoist Accident

Cranes and hoists are important tools for construction. They make many tasks easier but are also one of the major causes of construction site accidents. Operating errors or malfunctions can cause severe injuries to the victim.  Most of these types of injuries are remedied by lawsuits under Labor Law §240.

  • Slip and Fall

Wet floors or the presence of slippery materials or objects on the floor, lead to slip and fall accidents. Construction sites are often covered with slippery surfaces. Serious injuries can occur from these slip and falls.  Depending on the factual circumstances surrounding the particular incident, these claims can be remedied by lawsuits under Labor Law §241(6) or Labor Law §200.

  • Gas Leaks and Explosions

Gas leaks and explosions can be deadly. With a sudden leak and explosion, a large number of workers can be affected. The gases can cause serious injuries from inhalation, irritation, burning or death.  Depending on the factual circumstances surrounding these accidents, these types of cases can also be remedied by lawsuits under Labor Law §241(6) or Labor Law §200.

  • Electrocutions

Overhead electric wires, electrical equipment, railway construction and lighting are some of the most serious causes of construction site accidents. These are dangerous enough to cause grave injuries or permanent significant medical issues. You can always consult a construction accident attorney in Brooklyn to get compensation in such cases.  These types of accidents are most typically remedied by lawsuits under Labor Law §241(6).

  • Fall from Heights

Ladder, scaffolding and roofing accidents are common occurrences on construction sites. Falling from the top of buildings can cause head injuries and other devastating injuries.  These types of accident cases are remedied under Labor Law §240.

The job of a construction worker is always full of unpredictable, life-threatening challenges. Many construction workers in New York meet the inevitable prematurely, because of the life-threatening situations they deal with while working on construction sites. The death of a New York-based construction worker in Manhattan is an example that has come to light on Saturday.

The Cause of Accident:

This horrible construction-site accident happened just after 3:00 a.m. near the Holland Tunnel. A piece from a 7-ton crane fell on, and resulted in the immediate death of, Gregory Echavarria, 34. He hailed from Bushwick, Brooklyn.

A counterweight came crashing down on his body while he was trying to help assemble the 7-ton crane in wet conditions. Keith, Gregory’s brother, was also working at the same construction site at the time of the accident. However, he did not witness the accident.

Anyone injured?

Two more people suffered minor injuries in this accident. Both of them were taken immediately to Lennox Hill, a nearby hospital, for medical help and observation.

Construction site accidents in New York are increasing:

Gregory’s case is just the latest example. He has become the third casualty in such accidents in less than a week’s time in New York. Meaning, two more construction workers have lost their lives in accidents this week.

The two were Nelson Salinas, 51, and Erik Mendoza, 23. Nelson was working on external repairs for a building in Manhattan, whereas Erik met his death due to a fall from a 13-story building in Brooklyn.

Some information about Gregory Echavarria:

Gregory was a former U.S military soldier. He served the U.S. military, doing three tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. He has left behind a three-month-old infant named Garrison, and three more kids from his ex-wife.

What else?

Multiple complaints had been lodged to The Department of Buildings on April 2nd. According to these complaints, the building involved in the accident did not meet the required safety standards. Taking these complaints into account, The Department of Buildings took action and put a PSWO (Partial Stop Work Order) on the property

This order was lifted last Monday after the issues mentioned in the complaints were addressed.

Once again, Gregory is now the third construction worker to be killed while working on a construction site in New York.

It is a developing story and you should keep coming back to our website to receive future updates about it.

A construction worker’s life is often at risk on the job site. Simply put, the nature of their job involves a lot of risk. At times, these risks can turn into a horrible reality, flipping their lives upside-down. Sadly, a construction-site accident in New York resulted in this reality for two workers.

What, or who, caused the accident?

According to sources, Timothy Braico, a senior branch manager for Western Specialty Contractors based in St. Louis, and Terrance Edwards, a site superintendent for the firm, ignored crane regulations and applicable industrial codes established by the city’s Buildings Department and New York’s legislature. This resulted in a significant construction site accident in New York. The following are details of the incident:

  • According to a report, Braico ordered a Jekko mini-crane for the project. However, there were no workers available at the job site with proper training to operate this crane.
  • No safety plan was submitted to the city for the use of the mini-crane, as dictated by regulations.
  • Edwards directed an ironworker to operate the mini-crane to hoist glass panels up from a lower floor. Edwards didn’t know, or didn’t check, the load capacity of the crane. He didn’t even ask the ironworker to tether it, as per the city’s rules.

As a result, the crane lurched forward, then capsized, before crashing down four stories. As the crane fell, the boom struck both Christopher Jackson and George Delgado. Both workers had been assigned the task of assisting from the floor below.

What happened to the injured ironworkers?

According to reports, both ironworkers suffered serious injuries because of this construction site accident in New York. Jackson suffered a traumatic head injury, affecting his ability to speak and walk properly. As for Delgado, a severe spinal injury has impaired his walking and movement abilities.

What is the fallout?

Both Braico and Edwards face criminal charges for their roles in the reckless endangerment that caused this severe construction site accident in New York. The also face assault charges for the impact this incident has had on the lives of the two construction workers, as well as their families.

People reach out to personal injury lawyers in NY, or construction accident attorneys, in the event they meet with such a tragedy. Remember, not all accidents are avoidable; however, some injuries are preventable. Here are a few tips that can help you prevent these kinds of injuries.

Dangerous excavation work at NY construction sites

Excavation is the deadliest form of construction work performed today, as per OSHA. Statistics show – There is a 112 percent higher fatality rate for the excavation work as compared to general construction work. Also, OSHA released statistics that indicate that 23 workers were killed in trench collapses in 2016.

Three protective measures for construction trench accidents:

  • Shoring – Using aluminium hydraulics to prevent a trench from caving in.
  • Sloping – It is the process of cutting the trench wall back at an angle that inclines away from the trench.
  • Shielding – Use of trench boxes to prevent a cave-in of the trench.

If an accident does occur, a personal injury lawyer in NY can help you proceed in the right direction and help you get the compensation you deserve.
