This is an excerpt from a poem entitled the “New Colossus” by Emma Lazarus, in which she describes one of the most remarkable features of our great country, despite the volatility of public moods and the divisiveness of politics, America is and always has been a nation created by and for immigrants.  The vast majority of Americans are either immigrants or recent descendants of immigrants.
